After a long ᴊᴏᴜʀɴᴇʏ to become ᴘʀᴇɢɴᴀɴᴛ, one Utah couple is preparing for a flurry of five new family members. Jamie Scott, 33, spent five years trying for a baby with husband Skyler and was delighted to Fɪɴᴅ ᴏᴜᴛ she had Fɪɴᴀʟʟʏ ᴄᴏɴᴄᴇɪᴠᴇᴅ. But the couple, from St George, Utah, were sʜᴏᴄᴋᴇᴅ when an ᴜʟᴛʀᴀsᴏᴜɴᴅ revealed they were actually expecting quintuplets ᴀʀᴏᴜɴᴅ ᴀ ᴏɴᴇ ɪɴ 55 ᴍɪʟʟɪᴏɴ ᴄʜᴀɴᴄᴇ.
Jamie, said: “When we had the ᴜʟᴛʀᴀsᴏᴜɴᴅ I was expecting to see ᴏɴᴇ ᴏʀ ᴛᴡᴏ ʟɪᴛᴛʟᴇ sᴀᴄs and there were four in the first 20 minutes. Then we Fᴏᴜɴᴅ the fifth. I just cried. I was in awe. We had tried for quite some time so it was amazing that I even was ᴘʀᴇɢɴᴀɴᴛ. I asked, ‘Are they ᴀʟʟ ᴀʟɪᴠᴇ?’ and so they went through each one hearing their ʜᴇᴀʀᴛʙᴇᴀᴛs and taking their measurements and I breathed a sigh of relief.” With her previous ᴘʀᴇɢɴᴀɴᴄɪᴇs, Jamie sᴜFFᴇʀᴇᴅ from ʜʏᴘᴇʀᴇᴍᴇsɪs ɢʀᴀᴠɪᴅᴀʀᴜᴍ, which ᴄᴀᴜsᴇs ᴇxᴛʀᴇᴍᴇ ᴍᴏʀɴɪɴɢ sɪᴄᴋɴᴇss and ᴡᴇɪɢʜᴛ ʟᴏss. This time she’s been fortunate ɴᴏᴛ to have it, but being ᴘʀᴇɢɴᴀɴᴛ with quintuplets comes with its own challenges. She said: “When we Fᴏᴜɴᴅ ᴏᴜᴛ the news we told our sons and their reaction was, ‘That’s so cool’, and then my 12-year-old said, ‘Good luck.’ It’s very difficult to walk so I’m kind of ᴡʜᴇᴇʟᴄʜᴀɪʀ-ʙᴏᴜɴᴅ because I’m so ᴇxʜᴀᴜsᴛᴇᴅ, and I’m also hungry all the time. My ᴅᴏᴄᴛᴏʀrecommended eating 4,000 calories a day and I’ve gained 20lbs so far but it’s ɴᴏᴛ enough so I’ve got to eat a lot, fast. I’m craving healthy food like cucumbers but they have zero calories so I have to beef it up with high fat things like McDonald’s and ice cream. It’s also difficult to sleep because my sᴛᴏᴍᴀᴄʜ ɪs ɢʀᴏᴡɪɴɢ sᴏ Fᴀsᴛ and it’s ᴘʀᴇᴛᴛʏ ᴘᴀɪɴFᴜʟ. When ᴏɴᴇ ᴏF ᴛʜᴇ ʙᴀʙɪᴇs ᴍᴏᴠᴇs the all ᴍᴏᴠᴇ – it’s like a party in there. But the thought of having five babies is totally ᴏᴠᴇʀᴡʜᴇʟᴍɪɴɢ. I’m just really looking forward to bringing home five healthy, chubby babies.”
Eventually, she reached 29 weeks and her ᴄᴏɴᴛʀᴀᴄᴛɪᴏɴs started. She said :” The babies had to be ᴅᴇʟɪᴠᴇʀᴇᴅ ɪᴍᴍᴇᴅɪᴀᴛᴇʟʏ. Skyler gave me a kiss before I was wheeled into the theatre. When I came round, Skyler was smiling and told me we had five ᴛɪɴʏbut perfect babies. I burst into tears. I couldn’t believe we had done it.” Jamie was taken to the ɴᴇᴏɴᴀᴛᴀʟ ɪɴᴛᴇɴsɪᴠᴇ ᴄᴀʀᴇ ᴜɴɪᴛ where she met her ᴍɪʀᴀᴄʟᴇ quintuplets, all in their ᴏᴡɴ ɪɴᴄᴜʙᴀᴛᴏʀs. Violet Rose weighed 2lbs 6oz, Daisy Kate, 2lbs 9oz, Logan Matthew, 2lbs 2oz, Lincoln Alan, 2lbs, and Lily Jane, 2lbs 3oz. She added :” My heart was so full. I gazed at them all, taking in the 50 ᴛɪɴʏ Fɪɴɢᴇʀs and 50 ᴛɪɴʏ ᴛᴏᴇs before me. They were more beautiful than I ever thought they’d be. The quintuplets turned 11 weeks old on June 6, their ᴏʀɪɢɪɴᴀʟ ᴅᴜᴇ ᴅᴀᴛᴇ. It felt so special to have all five out of ʜᴏsᴘɪᴛᴀʟ in time for that day.”
Skyler said : “We moved past the sʜᴏᴄᴋ ᴘʜᴀsᴇ ᴘʀᴇᴛᴛʏ Fᴀsᴛ and now it is just gratitude and excitement that we get to be on this ᴊᴏᴜʀɴᴇʏ. ɴᴏ ᴍᴏʀᴇ ᴍᴇss. I’m a person who has lots of energy because I have ⒶⒹⒽⒹ, so my ʙʀᴀɪɴ is perfect for this. I know we are going to ʟᴏsᴇ a lot of sleep but being a dad is the most rewarding adventure of my life. It’s so amazing that I get to reset my ʙʀᴀɪɴ and go through every stage of being a child again with them – their first Christmas, their first trip to Disneyland. We want to show these five babies how beautiful and fun the world is.”
