Jamie and Skyler Scott had two children, 12-year-old Shayden and 7-year-old Landon, when they had been struggling to have a third child for five years.
After struggling for years of waiting, it turned out that Jamie has ᴘᴏʟʏᴄʏsᴛɪᴄ ᴏᴠᴀʀʏ sʏɴᴅʀᴏᴍᴇ, and they certainly won’t have any more children, at least not naturally.
They resorted to ᴀʀᴛɪꜰɪᴄɪᴀʟ ɪɴsᴇᴍɪɴᴀᴛɪᴏɴ, the first of which failed, but to their greatest surprise Jamie became pregnant the second time. After the tests, it was also revealed that they would have not one, but five children. The chance of conceiving five babies was 0.003%.
“We were so excited after the scan that we quickly asked the boys out of school and had to record their reactions when we asked them how many babies they thought I had in my belly. Shayden guessed triplets, while Landon guessed quadruplets. To put it mildly, their mouths fell open when I told them we were going to have five babies,” said Jamie.
“At the 18-week examination, it was also revealed that we would have three girls and two boys. We always wanted a sister for Shayden and Landon, and now they have three!” he said happily.
But the pregnancy was far from as easy as they expected.
“I was so exhausted I had to be in a wheelchair, I just couldn’t put on as much weight as I should have. Doctors said I needed to eat 4,000 calories a day for that many kids. I’ve always been thin so it was quite difficult. I lived on pizza, hamburgers, milkshakes and ice cream. My stomach was already pretty sore, and when one baby moved, they all moved,” Jamie said.
Jamie and his family had to move to be closer to a medical facility where they could give birth in safe conditions. The woman went into labor at 21 weeks.
“Temporarily, we moved almost 600 kilometers to be near a hospital in Arizona, where the ᴄᴀᴇsᴀʀᴇᴀɴ sᴇᴄᴛɪᴏɴ was performed safely. The goal was to reach 33 weeks in a healthy way, but unfortunately, labor began at 21 and a half weeks. The doctors said there was no chance to save five babies at the same time at 21 weeks. We were completely devastated.”
Just when everyone thought the worst, labor suddenly stopped and Jamie’s white blood cells stabilized. According to the experts, what happened then was a miracle, but the young mother was forced to stay in bed strictly for the next period. She finally reached 29 weeks and her contractions started.
After the initial excitement, the babies were happily born, all healthy: Violet Rose, Daisy Kate, Logan Matthew, Lincoln Alan and Lily Jane. In the following weeks, the babies’ breathing was still assisted by images, but when they were strong enough, they were taken home, where their two older brothers were waiting for them.
“Shayden and Landon were so happy, I’ve never seen them like that before,” Skyler recalled.
